Spatial frequency effects in masking by light.

چکیده
Observers detected briefly pulsed sine-wave gratings presented with various asynchronies before, during or after a 700 msec conditioning flash. Although the conditioning flash raised increment thresholds for detection of both low and high spatial frequency gratings, shapes of the masking curves differed. Curves for low spatial frequency gratings exhibited peaks at the conditioning field on and offset, resembling data reported by Crawford (1947). However, when a high spatial frequency grating was detected, no on or offset peaks were found. These results are consistent with a model of the human visual system postulating the existence of separate sustained and transient mechanisms.

Zero frequency masking and a model of contrast sensitivity
Stimulating the visual system tends to desensitize it to certain stimulus properties. Such desensitization is usually called adaptation or masking, but the distinction between the two is unclear. Nonspecific desensitization by light is usually regarded as adaptation, whereas pattern-specific desensitization is typically considered masking. Here we unify the treatment of such desensitizing pheno...
متن کاملPost-retinal processing of background luminance
It is generally thought that mean luminance and low spatial frequency information in a visual image are sharply attenuated at the retina, due to processes of light adaptation and the spatial filtering effects of lateral inhibition. Our results from interocular luminance masking suggest, however, that cortical masking effects play a primary role in the attenuation of low frequency sensitivity. R...
متن کاملMetacontrast masking within and between visual channels: effects of orientation and spatial frequency contrasts.
We measured the strength and optimal target-mask onset asynchrony (SOA(max)) of metacontrast masking using Gabor patches as targets and sinusoidal rings with Gaussian envelopes as masks. We varied spatial frequencies (f) between 0.5 and 8 cpd to manipulate the degree to which spatial frequency channels in the visual system are triggered. By varying spatial frequencies as well as spatial frequen...
متن کاملMultiple spatial frequency channels in human visual perceptual memory
Current models of short-term visual perceptual memory invoke mechanisms that are closely allied to low-level perceptual discrimination mechanisms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which human visual perceptual memory for spatial frequency is based upon multiple, spatially tuned channels similar to those found in the earliest stages of visual processing. To this end we ...
متن کاملMonocular and dichoptic masking effects on the frequency doubling illusion
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effects of both monocular and dichoptic masking on the frequency doubling (FD) illusion, using both temporal and spatial masks. Monocular spatial tuning effects occurred around the fundamental FD spatial frequency of 0.25 cycles per degree (c/deg), whereas dichoptic spatial frequency tuning effects occurred at the doubled spatial frequency of 0.5...
